Put the rank 1 and rank 76 Feraligatr against each other in the Great League and rank 1 falls first — with zero, one, or two shields each. Rank leans toward bulk, so chasing it costs you Attack value.
Two individuals you cannot tell apart on paper
Both land on CP 1,499. Stat product and SCP are all but identical. The difference is that rank 76 carries more Attack and more Defense, and only gives up HP.

Those stat values move the damage by one
Attack 122.5 against 124.0, Defense 118.9 against 121.6. Both gaps tip the floor in the damage formula the same way.

So far this is breakpoints. The question is what those single points do across a whole battle.
Running it with charged moves and shields
Counting fast moves alone would mislead, so the full 1v1 is simulated with energy, turns, CMP, and shields. Each side throws its strongest affordable charged move as soon as it can and shields the earliest hits.

Rank 1 falls first in every case. It does not matter which side wins CMP when both throw a charged move on the same turn.
Not a fluke: 185 individuals do the same
This particular rank 76 is nothing special. Run all 4,096 combinations against rank 1 and 185 of them win with zero, one, and two shields alike.
The winners are not clustered just below rank 1 — they run from rank 10 to rank 3,161.
The reason is simple. Rank is the product of Attack, Defense, and HP, and the individuals that maximise that product tend to give up Attack value — enough to fall below the damage thresholds. It is the same structure as why a lower Attack IV ranks higher, seen from the other side.
About this calculation
The numbers follow the same rules as GBL Box's rank calculation, damage calculation, and battle simulator. On top of that, the app's own engine was run to confirm that every figure here matches — rank, stat values, SCP, CP, the 4/5 and 40/41 damage, the 40/20/12 HP left, and the count of 185.
Baiting — throwing a weak charged move to draw out a shield — is not modelled. Real play can change the conclusion.
